The times we are living in has a big impact on the way that design works. The styles that connect with people and the way you communicate with audiences changes through the years. How were designs made before computers and for what reason? How will the future of design look?

Change magazine is an experimental print magazine about the impact and progressions of graphic design. For the magazine, I wrote a column about how design influences the changes in the world and how the world influences the changes in design.

It also contains an interview I had with Merijn Van Velzen, Senior designer of Studio Dumbar, about the branding of NS and the dutch police that the studio did in the late 70s, the way the studio operates internally and the effect of DEMO (Design in Motion, 80 animated design screens on Amsterdam station) on viewers.

Change Magazine

While creating the magazine my goal was to experiment with materials and try new printing techniques. I did many tests to see what paper type would feel the best. The magazine was printed with a RISO printer in red overlapping black and white text and images. The ink never really dries and gives off on your hands, giving the magazine a fragile feeling. The magazine is also hand-bound and marks for me the start of experimentations with analogue techniques. Qualifying me to work with both screens and paper.
